Five Great TV Hen Nights

The wacky world of TV loves its big wild parties – and hen nights are a perfect opportunity to show the best (and worst!) of some of telly’s wildest characters. While the hen nights shown on popular sitcoms and soaps are not necessarily ones you would like to get involved in yourself, they can certainly be very entertaining! Here’s five of the best…

Big Fat Gypsy Weddings (Channel 4, 2011). It’s Josie’s last night before her wedding and she’s planning a massive night out with the girls. This popular show has revealed the excess at every stage of the ‘big fat gypsy wedding’, and Josie’s hen night is no exception.

Little Moe’s Hen Night (Eastenders, 2002). Poor Little Moe had a hell of a time in the hit BBC1 soap before finally finding happiness, so everyone was rooting for her hen night to go with a bang. What sort of bang, however, remained to be seen!

Stacey’s Hen Night (Gavin and Stacey, 2007). The nation fell in love with Welsh sweety-pie Stacey and her Essex beau Gavin in this top BBC sitcom. Here’s what happened when she met her girls for the big night before the big day…

Rebecca’s Hen Night (Neighbours, 2009). ‘Twas the night before Rebecca Napier and Paul Robinson’s wedding and Rebecca only wanted a low key affair. But she got rather more than she bargained for, and a revealed secret placed the wedding itself in jeopardy…

Chas and Lexi’s Hen Night (Emmerdale, 2009). With Lexi roping in less-than-enthusiastic volunteers for her hen night, it was clear that this may not be the happiest of affairs…

New Dance Movie to Open in 3D

Dance fans are in for a movie treat soon, as the new film by acclaimed director Wim Wenders prepares to open at cinemas across the UK.

The modern dance documentary, called “Pina”, utilises the latest 3D technology to bring the stunning choreography right out of the screen and into the room.  It pays tribute to choreographer Pina Bausch, who sadly died just before the end of filming. It has already been nominated for an Oscar.

Wim Wenders has previously won acclaim for directing such classic films as “Wings of Desire” and “Paris, Texas”, and began working on the modern dance classic in 2009, before he had become aware of the possibilities of 3D.

He told news agency Reuters:  “When we started making the film back in 2009, 3D was still relatively new, and you couldn’t just go out and rent the camera equipment. So we had to make all the gear ourselves, and my stereographer custom-made it all. Now you can just go out and rent all sorts of rigs, but we did feel like pioneers. There was no one we could call to discuss it or get advice.”

We may not all be able to dance like Pina Bausch and her protégés, but we can at least hit the heights of the street dance champ shown here, in this hilarious Groove Armada video:

Dance party Specialist interview with Oh so Perfect

Magic Steps Dance Party Specialists

Oh So Perfect recently had the pleasure of  meeting professional dance company, Magic Steps.

Dedicated to helping couples prepare those special moves for their first dance, and providing Hens across the country with a unique party to remember, Magic Steps also had the recent honour of choreographing Emmerdale’s 2011 “Marlon and Paddy’s Big Night In” DVD!

First established 6 years ago, in Leeds, Magic Steps now cover the whole of the UK. Professional dancer and choreographer, Zoe, is here to tell you a little bit more about the company…

Magic Steps provide unforgettable dance experiences for your hen weekend or first dance.

A dance experience is a unique and exciting  idea and a great way to start your Hen weekend. Its a fabulous way for all your Hens to get to know each other and get whipped into a sexy dance troupe. You will learn a personalised routine, anything from Dirty Dancing to Thriller, that you will want to perform again and again, maybe even at the wedding!

Our dance classes are designed to suit the absolute beginner so there is no need to worry if you have two left feet. The idea is to have fun and a giggle with the girls.

We also provide first dance lessons for couples, whether they just want to avoid the awkward shuffle on the dance floor or they want to truly dazzle their guests. Our patient dance instructors will even travel to the couple’s home and take care of everything, giving them the confidence to enjoy their first dance as husband and wife.

Our wedding dance lessons will suit any Bride and Groom; from the Traditional Waltz to the Vintage inspired 50’s wedding dance or even the slightly crazy Thriller routine, our Dance experinces are really dynamic and would suit any bride.

Glamorous, fun and exciting - we go the extra mile to ensure our clients get the very best!

Zoe graduated with a Diploma in Musical Theatre. Whilst at college she trained in ballet, tap, modern and ballroom. Upon graduating, Zoe gained her first job as a production dancer on-board Carnival cruise lines. She then went on to join a world tour with pop sensation, Lemar, before spending 6 months living in India working on a Bollywood movie.  On returning to London, Zoe has worked as an Assistant Director and Choreographer for ITV ‘Emmerdale’, ‘Come Rain Come Shine’, BBC’s ‘Comic Relief’ and Channel 4s ‘Big Brother’…

I saw a gap in the market after my Aunty came to me in a panic before her wedding day. Her and my uncle certainly have two left feet, so I whipped up a perfect routine for their first dance. I created Magic Steps with my partner Steven to help other couples in need of  little help before their big day.  In the past 5 years dance has become more and more popular due to shows such as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, ‘Got To Dance’ and ‘Pineapple Studios’.

Wedding dance lessons have become a ‘must have’ as everyone now wants to look thieir best on their wedding day and Hen dance parties has really seen the same effect as one of the most popular choices for a daytime hen activity. We now have over 200 amazing instructors nationwide and offer over 30 different party themes.

Zoe’s partner, Steven, graduated from The Royal Academy of Music London. Upon returning to London, Steven played “Peter” in ‘Company’ and “Jinx” in ‘Forever Plaid’ . He then played “Nick” in the Europen Tour of ‘Fame’. Steven has just recently finished playing Take That’s Howard Donald in UK tour ‘Back for Good’.

Together we have been running Magic Steps full time for five years and love working with each individual couple. Each couple’s requirements are completely different so no two days in the dance studio are ever the same!!

One amazing booking we had – the Bride and groom contacted us as they wanted an elaborate show stopping dance routine and wanted proffessioanal street dancers to join them on stage. They wanted to do this as a complete surprise for their guests. What they didnt know, however, was that the cheif bridesmaid had already contacted us to learn a surprise dance routine for the Bride and Groom! With a lot of work we pulled it off and both parties were completely surprised.

We also had a bride that was so self concious with her body after giving birth to her two sons she has decided she was not even going to wear a wedding dress, let alone perform a first dance. However, after the third lesson of the dance package booked by her partner, she confided in me that thanks to having these lessons in the comfort of her own home she felt inspired and confident and had decided to go and buy the wedding dress that she never dared buy.

Madonna Picked Dancing Dolls for Super Bowl Routine after YouTube Spotting

There was once dance party this weekend that seemingly had the whole world watching – pop legend Madonna‘s show at the half time of the US Super Bowl.

Madonna’s live performance, was another masterpiece of choreography, thanks to the attention to detail of the star and the stylings of her chosen dance troupe – the Dancing Dolls of Southern University.

Madonna spotted the team after a YouTube triumph – a video of their performances came to the attention of one of her personal trainers, along with a recommendation that they accompany the star to Bridgestone, Indianapolis for the much-hyped Halftime Show, which drew more than 100 million viewers.

The team’s captain Kayla Smith said that they were perfectly confident on stage, following several trips to New York City to practice with Madonna.

“Once (Madonna) did all her tricks in the show, we knew all we had to do was go out and do our best,” she revealed. “We were on automatic.”

Kayla and team mate April Rollins first flew to NYC last December to meet Madonna and find out more about the opportunity of a lifetime.

“We thought we were actually going to be learning something, but when we got there, they wanted April and I to teach them something,” she recalled. “We were like, ‘Oh wow, you want our choreography?’”

Decide for yourself whether the Dancing Dolls have what it takes to mentor Madge, with this selection of their finest YouTube moments:

Top Ten Dance Movies

One of the most popular movie genres is the dance spectacular. A cross between a musical and a drama, dance movies have soared in popularity since their initial triumph in the 1980s. Here’s 10 of the best:

  1. Dirty Dancing (1987). Possibly the grand-daddy of them all, this film must surely be engraved on every girl’s heart. The plot, in which sweet daddy’s girl Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman (Jennifer Grey) meets hunky dance camp instructor Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) and learns both to dance and become a woman, is the stuff of legends, with the finale being described as “the most goosebump-inducing dance scene in movie history.”
  2. Flashdance (1983). Second only to Dirty Dancing in most girls’ affections, this classic still sets pulses racing when we hear the title track What A Feeling. Jennifer Beals plays Alex Owens, a Pittsburgh woman working as a welder by day and an exotic dancer by night, who chases her dream to get into ballet school. With some great buddy bonding, romance and dance scenes along the way, the explosive finale has become one of the movie world’s all-time classic scenes.
  3. Saturday Night Fever (1977). The movie that helped disco break into the mainstream, while also making a star of John Travolta, Saturday Night Fever inspired a generation of white suits and pointy dance moves. Travolta plays a 19-year-old paint shop worker who is a nobody during the day, but transforms into a disco god every night at his local club. Staying Alive by the Bee Gees is another one of those songs that drags you on to the dance floor!
  4. Strictly Ballroom (1992). Bringing the world of Australian ballroom dancing to the big screen might have seemed a gamble, but it certainly paid off, with this film becoming so famous that it even inspired the title of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. Paul Mercurio plays dancer Scott Hastings, trying to modernise his country’s ballroom dancing scene. Audiences flocked to this for the classy dance action and the glitzy costumes.
  5. Shall We Dance (2004). A romantic comedy with a dance twist – featuring no less than Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere! – in which bored husband secretly takes ballroom dancing lessons after falling for J-Lo’s dance instructor. The leading man and lady make sweet music as they whisk each other round the dance floor.
  6. Step Up (2006). Channing Tatum plays Tyler Gage – a delinquent gifted a second chance after vandalising a performing arts school. Tyler has to dance his way to a scholarship and the love of dance partner Nora. With sunny characters, great music and stunning dance scenes, including a great group dance in a nightclub, this film is a great evening’s entertainment.
  7. Save the Last Dance (2001). A teen romance, with a young dancer trying to get over her mother’s death. The ballet student is portrayed sensitively by Julia Styles, and her life – and dancing – picks up when she meets and bonds with a young hip-hop dancer.
  8. Center Stage (2000). Another ballet movie, this follows the fortunes of three women at the American Ballet Academy striving to join the American Ballet Company.
  9. Dance With Me (1998). A Latin dance-themed movie, starring Vanessa Williams and Chayanne as Ruby and Rafael, featuring some hip-shaking samba, rumba and many more Latin licks. Although the dance is far more impressive than the plot, well worth a watch.
  10. Mad Hot Ballroom (2005). A documentary rather than a drama, this movie follows the lives of New York City elementary school students, who learn ballroom dancing and take part in a city-wide dancing competition. Initially reluctant, it is heart-warming to see their enthusiasm and dance skills grow.

Five Classic Eighties Dance Moves

Classic 80′s Dance Moves

Right now, one of the hottest themes for a hen night dance partyis the Eighties. Far enough back now to seem like a different and exotic world, but close enough for many brides-to-be to remember their Eighties childhoods, the decade of shoulder pads, New Romantics and Gordon Gecko.

While the Eighties was a time for some truly starling fashion choices, it was also a decade with many classic dance moves – some stylish, some very, very, silly indeed. Here’s five of the most celebrated:

Moonwalking. One of the most iconic stars of the Eighties was Michael Jackson, who was in his heyday with the Thriller and Bad albums, so it is fitting that first place goes to this legendary dance move. Hard to master – but impressive when you do, the Moonwalk will inspire awe in your friends!

Breakdancing. The Eighties saw the first flowering of electro, hip-hop and rap music, and of all the dance trends that accompanied this new dawn in music, breakdancing was the most impressive to watch – when it was done right. When carried out experts, it was a gravity-defying spectacle, when done wrong, it was sheer embarrassment, and potentially dangerous, to boot!

The Robot. While breakdancing was beyond the limits of most people in the Eighties, there were several spin-offs from the electro-rap renaissance – the most popular of which was perhaps The Robot. The aim of the dance is to move jerkily but rhythmically as if you are a stiff-limbed droid enjoying its first turn on the dance floor.

The Worm. Another breakdance manoeuvre to break away into more general dance floor usage, The Worm literally involves throwing yourself down on your front and undulating across the floor, like a little caterpillar. Harder than it looks, and some people have even come to grief attempting this dance while intoxicated, so have a care!

The MC Hammer Dance. Who doesn’t like joining in with “Stop! Hammer Time!” when the classic Can’t Touch This comes on the turntables? Well, with a little practice you can also create hammer time, gyrating the legs, shoulders and feet like the star of the song himself. Maybe lay off the gold lamé harem pants, though!
